The BBC Trust has accepted plans to close down the BBC Asian Network as a national service but rejected the closure of BBC 6 Music.
The BBC Trust said that it "would consider a formal proposal for the closure of the Asian Network, although this must include a proposition for meeting the needs of the station's audience in different ways."
The BBC Trust's decision follows a three-month public consultation, in which members of the public were invited to give their opinion on the two flanking stations. While BBC 6 Music received immense support from the public and the industry, the feedback for the BBC Asian Network was somewhat lackluster. It received just over 3,000 responses in the strategy review carried out since March this year.
The BBC Trust said that while audiences had been dipping for the BBC Asian Network, it did remain a valuable service. It wants a different plan, which takes the best of what the radio station does and delivers it to a more regional scale.
