My Name is Khan has been on the tip of everyone’s tongues from Shah Rukh Khan making an appearance on Jonathan Ross to the trio of Kajol, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh doing endless promotion for the film from US to UK to even Abu Dhabi!
Well Brit-Asian got the chance to see the film yesterday (Thursday 11th February) and here is a short but sweet review of the movie!
The film directed by Karan Johar is a fantastic example of a Bollywood drama being able to compete if not better storylines and quality then any Hollywood blockbuster.
Karan tugs on the viewers heartstrings throughout the movie however wants you to come home with a special message based on doing good deeds and equality.
The film sees Shah Rukh play autism stricken Rizvan Khan while Kajol plays his love interest in Mandira. The story plays on the part of Hindu-Muslim marriages and the importance of how one shouldn’t be distinguished by race, colour or creed which is emphasized throughout the movie.
Without giving away the plot too much, the film is based around Rizvan Khan battling to speak with the US president in relation to the murder of his step-son who was racially killed after the 9/11 terrorist bombings. He was sent by wife Mandira who regretted falling for Rizvan Khan as her son would still be alive if she didn’t fall for a Muslim man.
Shah Rukh’s character battles through the disadvantages of autism to fall in love, live a happy life and prove that his surname Khan doesn’t make him a terrorist.
Shah Rukh does a blinding job playing a role we’ve never really seen him in. I personally felt Shah Rukh’s acting was the same if not better than Tom Hank’s from Forrest Gump, it’s that type of film.
Kajol’s performance mirrored Shah Rukh’s in that it was totally believable and the chemistry of the pair is still strong after 8 years apart.
Overall the movie is a definite hit, an emotional movie with a brilliant moral to the story. It really reminds me a little of Forrest Gump which will be evident once you’ve seen the movie. The only criticism is the film drags on a little near the end but shouldn’t put anyone off seeing this emotional blockbuster.
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
